This invention relates to a method for producing cloud free, cloud-shadow free, and tonally balanced images from cloudy images acquired by optical remote sensing satellites. The invention employs techniques in image processing and computer vision to discriminate various land cover types from clouds. In addition, the locations of cloud shadows are predicted from the knowledge of imaging geometry. The method is able to produce high quality cloud-free mosaics with minimal human operator intervention.
