Submissions invited for Home Office INSTINCT Augmented Reality trials
Logica, a leading business and technology service company, today announced the launch of a challenge to uncover the leading Augmented Reality (AR) technologies for use in UK security and counter terrorism operations. Technology providers from across industry and academia are being invited to submit their AR products which will be evaluated and shortlisted by Logica and its partners, before being demonstrated to the Home Office and Law Enforcement Agencies at a Showcase Event in January 2011. The project, titled Technology Demonstrator 3 (TD3), aims to identify current and future AR capabilities, whilst evaluating them against various security and counter terrorism scenarios. TD3 is part of the Innovative Science and Technology in Counter Terrorism (INSTINCT) cross government approach that seeks innovative solutions to support CONTEST, the UK’s Strategy for Countering International Terrorism.
Commenting on TD3, Julian Cracknell, Business Director for Intelligence, Security and Counter Terrorism, Logica UK said, “Consumers associate augmented reality with locating the closest tube station on their Smartphones. TD3 aims to demonstrate that AR has a much wider use and can be used to support security and counter terrorism efforts in the UK. We are very excited to be working with INSTINCT and the Home Office, and look forward to reviewing the entries.”
Logica has been contracted to oversee the entry process to TD3, evaluate the submissions and provide scenario based testing in conjunction with INSTINCT. Where appropriate, Logica will also be providing advice and support to technology providers who are looking to take their AR technologies to market.
Despite offering AR capabilities for other clients, in this instance Logica will not be submitting any technologies of its own, ensuring the neutrality of the submission and evaluation process. Logica will lead a consortium including Systems Engineering & Assessment (SEA), Nottingham University and seven other companies to identify AR technologies that can help now and potentially with extra research, in the future.
